Private Felmyst Server, a World of Warcraft server developed by fans and designed to mimic Blizzard's MMO that was available in 2007 when the Burning Crusade expansion launched WoTLK Gold, was shut down. The server launched on July 21 however it was shut down an hour later.
Gummy52. a developer on the project, shared an image of a cease-and-desist note sent by Mitchell Silberberg & Knupp LLP an attorney firm that represents World of Warcraft developer Blizzard. The letter stated that the server was an infringement of Blizzard's intellectual property.
"We know that, through your participation with Felmyst You are engaged on the design, development, and hosting of so-called "emulated server software (hereafter"Infringing Services")," ),'" that the document states. "Among other things, [these] Infringing Services allow users to play altered and/or illegitimate copies of WoW online [without] the need for a legitimately-purchased copy or subscription."
Ars Technica has additional details on the letter and goes on say that "Blizzard has never authorized or authorized specifically prohibits any activity that is not permitted."
